Roger Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland (technically he was born in Binningen, a municipality in the district of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel) on the 8th of August 1981, to his South African born mother Lynette Durand and his Swiss born father Robert Federer. Roger Federer grew up in Müchenstein, a suburban municipality near Basel, stationed close to the German and French borders of Switzerland, where he learned to speak Swiss German, English, French and German.

Federer begun playing Tennis at the age of eight. As a Junior Player, Federer won the boys singles title at Wimbledon in 1998 and ended the year as the Junior World No. 1 - from there, Federer became a Professional Tennis Player.

In 2003, Federer’s dream came true as he lifted the Wimbledon trophy for the first time. He ended the year as World Number 2, and it was then that his career first completely took off. In February 2004 after winning the Australian Open Roger Federer surpassed Andy Roddick and became World Number 1 for the first time in his career.
